First Impressions

Walking up to Santa Grand Hotel East Coast a NuVe Group Collection, you immediately get that boutique hotel vibe — it’s not trying too hard, but there’s definitely thought put into the design. The building sits right on East Coast Road, and honestly, the location is what first caught my attention. This four-star property has that clean, modern Singapore aesthetic without feeling sterile, which I really appreciated after staying in some of the more cookie-cutter places around the city.

The Katong Advantage

Here’s what I love about staying in Katong — you’re getting the real Singapore experience without the tourist crowds of Orchard Road or Marina Bay. The hotel puts you right in the heart of this heritage district, where you can actually walk to some incredible Peranakan shophouses and local eateries. I mean, you’re literally steps away from some of the best laksa in the city, and the famous Katong antique shops are just down the street. The couples who stay here clearly get it — there’s something romantic about wandering these colorful streets that you just don’t find in the more commercial areas.

The Room Experience

My room was compact but smartly designed — typical Singapore style where every inch counts. The bed was comfortable, and I actually slept well despite being on a busy road (good soundproofing, apparently). What struck me was how clean everything felt, and the little touches like decent lighting for reading and enough power outlets near the bed. The bathroom was modern and functional, though don’t expect a huge soaking tub or anything fancy. It’s the kind of space that works perfectly for a few nights when you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring the neighborhood anyway.

Morning Fuel

The continental breakfast is pretty straightforward — nothing that’ll blow your mind, but it gets the job done. Fresh fruit, decent coffee, and the usual suspects like pastries and cereals. Honestly though, with all the incredible hawker centers and cafes within walking distance, I found myself skipping the hotel breakfast after the first morning to try the local kaya toast and kopi spots. That’s actually a good problem to have when you’re staying somewhere with this much food culture right outside your door.

What really makes this place work is that repeat guest thing — and I can see why people come back. It’s not about flashy amenities or over-the-top service; it’s about being in exactly the right spot to experience authentic Singapore. You’re close enough to the city center (about 15 minutes by MRT) but far enough out to feel like you’re discovering something special. The staff seems to genuinely know the area well, and they’re happy to point you toward the good stuff that tourists usually miss. For the price point and location, it just makes sense — especially if you want to explore beyond the typical Singapore highlights.

  The property is in a good location, 5/10 minute walk to the MRT station, in a clean area on Joo Chiat Road with its beautiful colourful houses, I recommend you walk around the area to see them. Plenty bars and restaurants near by and a big mall if you fancy some easy food. The roof top pool is lovely and refreshing at night as it is open until 10pm.
