The Sultan Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to The Sultan on Jalan Sultan, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical chain hotel — and honestly, that’s exactly what makes it work. This three-star property sits right in the heart of Kampong Glam, and I mean right in the thick of things. The building itself has character, though don’t expect marble lobbies or anything too flashy. What you get instead is something more authentic, which actually feels pretty refreshing in a city where everything can feel a bit polished sometimes.
The Kampong Glam Advantage
Here’s what I love about staying in this neighborhood — you’re literally surrounded by some of the best local food and culture in Singapore. The Sultan Mosque is just a few minutes’ walk away, and Arab Street with all its textile shops and cafes is right there too. You know what’s great? You can grab amazing roti prata for breakfast, wander through the colorful shophouses, and still be at Bugis MRT station in about ten minutes when you need to get somewhere else. Couples seem to really get this — apparently they rate the location super highly, and I can see why.
Your Room Setup
The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully laid out — you’re not going to have tons of space to spread out, but everything you need is there. The air conditioning works well (crucial in Singapore’s heat), and the bed was actually quite comfortable. I appreciated that they kept things simple rather than trying to cram in unnecessary amenities. The bathroom was clean and functional, though again, we’re talking about efficient use of space rather than premium finishes here.
Local Flavors and Dining
While the hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, this is actually one of those cases where that’s not a problem at all. You’re surrounded by incredible food options — from traditional Middle Eastern cuisine to local hawker favorites. I ended up eating at different places every meal because there’s just so much within walking distance. The famous Zam Zam restaurant is practically next door, and if you want something more upscale, Haji Lane has plenty of trendy spots that are worth checking out.
Why Guests Love It
Look, The Sultan isn’t going to win any awards for opulence, but it nails what a lot of travelers actually want — a clean, comfortable base in an absolutely fantastic location. The fact that it has such a high location score makes total sense when you experience the neighborhood firsthand. You’re getting authentic Singapore culture right outside your door, easy access to transportation, and you’re not paying premium prices for amenities you might not even use. For travelers who want to actually experience the city rather than hide away in their hotel, this place delivers exactly what matters most.

Charming heritage hotel, in a vibrant area, with great public transport links – Michelle from Ireland (9/10)
Beautiful old buildings, hotel included the building in the street behind, which left these rooms very quiet, and the most charming hotel "corridor" that I've ever seen! As the corridor was an open air covered walkway, which then crossed over back gardens, and a bridge over a back alleyway. Beautiful!
The heritage room was spacious, with a high ceiling, shaded and stayed cool once the a/c was turned on, very comfy bed, crisp linen and quiet.
Bathroom small but functional. Nice toiletries and decent shower.
Great location, short walk to a 7/11, bus stops, 10 minutes to an MRT, the Sultan Mosque and Haji Lane, a vibrant Street of restaurants and bars.
The hotel restaurant was not yet open when we were there. There is a pavement cafe opposite where we got masala dosa for breakfasts! Great!
Kampong glam a lovely area, beautiful 2 storey heritage buildings, nestled next to stylish steel and glass skyscrapers.
