Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, an IHG Hotel Overview

First Impressions

Walking into Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, an IHG Hotel, you immediately sense this isn’t your typical five-star property. The lobby feels more like stepping into a beautifully curated heritage home than a corporate hotel — there’s this wonderful blend of Peranakan-inspired design with modern touches that actually works. I mean, the colorful tiles and vintage photographs tell the story of the Katong neighborhood without being heavy-handed about it. You know what struck me most? The staff genuinely seemed excited to share local stories, not just check you in and move on.

The Katong Experience

Honestly, the location on East Coast Road is what makes this place special. You’re right in the heart of Singapore’s most charming heritage district, where shophouses line the streets and the smell of laksa drifts from family-run eateries. It’s about a 15-minute walk to the beach — something most visitors don’t expect when staying in Singapore. The nearby Katong Shopping Centre might look unassuming, but it’s where locals actually shop and eat. I found myself wandering these streets every morning, discovering hole-in-the-wall places that serve the best kaya toast I’ve had outside of a traditional kopitiam.

Rooms That Tell Stories

Each room here feels thoughtfully designed rather than cookie-cutter luxury. Mine had this gorgeous mural depicting old Singapore, and the bathroom — well, it’s probably bigger than some hotel rooms I’ve stayed in. The rainfall shower was perfect after humid days exploring the city. What I really appreciated were the little touches: locally-sourced bath products, a coffee machine with actual good beans, and blackout curtains that actually work (trust me, this matters when you’re dealing with jet lag). The beds are incredibly comfortable, though the pillows might be too soft if you prefer firmer support.

Dining and Amenities

The rooftop restaurant offers surprisingly good views of the neighborhood’s colorful shophouses stretching toward the sea. Their menu focuses on modern interpretations of local dishes — the chili crab pasta sounds gimmicky but actually delivers. The infinity pool up there isn’t huge, but it’s perfect for cooling off during Singapore’s perpetually warm afternoons. There’s also a well-equipped fitness center, though honestly, walking around Katong provides plenty of exercise. Parking is available if you’re renting a car, but you really don’t need one here — the MRT connection gets you downtown in about 20 minutes.

Why Guests Love It

This hotel succeeds because it doesn’t try to be everything to everyone. Instead, it embraces its neighborhood and gives you an authentic taste of Singapore beyond the typical tourist circuit. Couples particularly seem to love the intimate atmosphere and the romantic walks along nearby beaches at sunset. The service strikes that perfect balance between attentive and unobtrusive — they remember your name and preferences without hovering. If you want to experience Singapore like someone who actually lives here rather than just checking off tourist attractions, this is your spot. Just don’t expect the sterile perfection of some luxury chains — the charm here lies in the personality and local character.

The luxury concierge service in Singapore secures Michelin chef tables, sky villa stays, and private formula track laps.

  • Not just a hotel but an experience that feels like a splendid gift – Stan from Russia (9/10)

I must confess I wanted to get a five-star hotel in Singapore, but also not to pay through my nose. So while I expected it to be quite good, I still thought there would be some sort of a trade-off. Well, there was none. Firstly, I didn't think the place would be so beautiful and the rooms (we had the ones with Peranakan décor) done in such impeccable, fine taste—it is breathtaking, really; plus all the amenities are in perfect condition and there are small touches that are absolutely bound to steal your heart. Secondly, the location itself is lovely—you are still in the centre of the city-state, just not where every other living soul seems to be at the same time, too. Right across the road you have the old Katong neighbourhood, which is as colourful, quaint and impressive as it is full of life of every type: cafes, shops, assorted temples; you name it. Thirdly, the hotel comes equipped with an Infinity pool that commands an unobstructed view of said Katong district, and getting a good evening swim after a day full of running around Singapore is such a cleansing treat. Fourthly, the breakfast has everything you may need and then some: you have the buffet selection and the a la carte selection, and if you're only in the mood for a cup of coffee, amiable staff may just kindly throw one in for you free of charge. So indeed the only reason why you may not want to stay here is if you need to have all the hustle and bustle of Singapore directly at your doorstep; other than that, Indigo Singapore Katong should really be your go-to option in this jewel of a city.
